Half is better.

Your better meat journey starts here. Learn about our mission to produce cattle with a smaller environmental footprint and delicious cuts of meat.

Our vision and story

Our commitment is simple: to produce truly exceptional meat from well-bred animals living a quality life, while minimising our environmental footprint.

Nestled on one side of the picturesque Mount Ruapehu, on a small family-owned dairy farm, Robert and Gail Gray have milked jersey cows with their sons, Brandon, and Zaine, for the last 14 years. On the other side of Mount Ruapehu, Rene Haeberli has lived on a small block of land for the last 28 years, with spectacular views and contented and happy animals.

The Lowline Angus was bred from the Aberdeen Angus in Australia. The goal was to produce a smaller beast which is superior in quality while requiring less feed and thereby lowering the impact on the environment.

The Ruapehu Lowline Angus breed is a cross between purebred purebred Lowline Angus and a purebred Jersey. Crossing these two breeds creates a hybrid animal which takes the best of both breeds to produce one of the best beef meats in the world.

Exceptional Flavour

Ruapehu Lowline Angus meat is celebrated for its rich, succulent flavour that is both robust and well-balanced.

The natural grazing habits of Lowline Angus cattle contribute to the development of a distinctive, full-bodied flavour profile.

Juicy and tender texture

Ruapehu Lowline Angus are known for consistently tender cuts of meat.

The well-distributed marbling enhances the tenderness of the meat, ensuring a juicy mouth-watering texture with every bite.

Versatility

Whether you prefer grilling, roasting, or slow cooking. Ruapehu Lowline Angus meat adapts well to various cooking methods making it suitable for a wide range of culinary applications.

The consistent and high quality cuts ensure a reliable cooking experience, allowing you to explore diverse recipes with confidence.

Sustainable and ethical

Our commitment to ethical and sustainable farming practices ensures that you are not only getting exceptional meat, you are also supporting environmentally responsible agriculture.

Ruapehu Lowline Angus cattle thrive on pasture-based systems, minimising the environmental impact while promoting the welfare of the animals.

Rene
Co-founder, Grower

In 1998, I founded Waimarino Pork, New Zealand's sole Bio Gro organic certified free-range pork farm. With up to 150 breeding sows, given my qualification as a veterinarian, I prioritised animal welfare, personally ensuring stress-free transport to the abattoir. Waimarino Pork gained renown for producing top-quality pork globally. In 1999, I established Harmony Meats, the only Bio Gro organic certified butchery in New Zealand, exporting fresh pork weekly to Singapore. Although I have moved on Harmony Meats continues selling nationwide. Given my passion for the meat industry, I've now ventured into producing high-quality beef with the Ruapehu Lowline Angus, a hybrid of Lowline Angus and Jersey cows. In collaboration the Gray family, our goal is to establish Ruapehu Lowline Angus as a top-tier beef product in New Zealand and abroad.
